According to the UN Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) estimates that to feed the forecasted 9.1 billion people in 2050, overall food production has to increase by 70% compared to present levels. This will have to be done with resources comparable to current ones but with a fairer supply chain. Furthermore, climate change, the unequal distribution of food in the world population, soil degradation, disruptions in supplies caused by international conflicts and the lack of water will increase differences making it more difficult, or even impossible, to maintain the same levels of food production. New approaches, waste reduction and a greater respect for nature are required in an ever changing hardly predictable context.
